Located in central Utah Valley. Known for the breathtaking 11,877-foot Mt. Nebo, the highest peak along the Wasatch Front. A popular destination for diverse year-round recreation. Fishing, family camping, scenic driving, arduous cycling, snowmobiling, horseback riding, and hiking.

  • Drive Nebo Loop Scenic Byway. The Mt. Nebo National Scenic Byway is a photographer’s dream with numerous overlooks and wildlife viewing opportunities. The byway crosses the national forest between Nephi and Payson, climbing to over 9,000 ft. and offering views of the Utah Valley and the Wasatch Mountains. A unique scenic feature is the Devil’s Kitchen Geologic Site where the eroding sandstone’s startling red color contrasts sharply with the mountain greenery. 

  • Take pictures at Devil’s Kitchen Geologic Interest Area similar to Bryce Canyon National Park

  • Take a hike and dip at Fifth Water Hot Springs

  • Try mountain climbing at Red Ledges Picnic Area

Balsam campground

Balsam Campground is located on the banks of pretty Hobble Creek just 12 miles from Springville, Utah, at an elevation of 6,000 feet. Visitors enjoy fishing and exploring local trails. The campground contains one group site that can accommodate up to 100 people. It contains picnic and serving tables, a campfire ring, a water spigot, and a cement site pad. This group site is a walk-to-site accessed by a steep, paved trail from the parking area. Single-family sites are available as well, with picnic tables and campfire rings with grills. Vault toilets and drinking water are provided. Firewood is available for purchase from the host at Cherry Campground.

Bear Canyon campground

Bear Canyon Campground is situated on the boundary of the Mount Nebo Wilderness Area just off the Nebo Loop Scenic Byway at an elevation of 6,800 feet. Visitors enjoy hiking and fishing in this quiet canyon. The campground contains three large group sites with picnic tables, serving tables, grills, and campfire circles. Sites A and B can accommodate up to 75 people each; Site C can accommodate up to 50 people. Vault toilets are provided. Roads, parking spurs, and walking paths within the sites are paved.

Blackhawk campground

Blackhawk Campground sits just off the Nebo Loop Scenic Byway at an elevation of 8,000 feet. Visitors enjoy the campground for its beautiful panoramic views and great trail opportunities. This large, campground contains a variety of campsites, including several group sites that can accommodate groups of up to 50 and 100 people each, equestrian sites and single and double-family sites. Loop E is made up of equestrian sites with corrals, hitching racks, water troughs, and horseback riding trails. Sites are equipped with picnic tables and campfire rings; larger sites also have serving tables and grills. Flush toilets and drinking water are provided. Firewood is available for purchase from the host. Roads and parking spurs are paved.

Cherry campground

Cherry Campground is located on the banks of pretty Hobble Creek just six miles from Springville, Utah, at an elevation of 5,200 feet. Visitors enjoy exploring local trails. The campground contains four tent-only group sites, three of which accommodate up to 75 people each; the other up to 50 people. Group Sites A and B are accessible. Sites contain picnic and serving tables, a campfire ring with benches, cement site pads, and large grassy areas for tents. Single and double-family sites are available as well, with picnic tables and campfire rings. Vault toilets are provided. Firewood is available for purchase from the host.

  • There is no water available at this campground. Please bring all the water you’ll need for your visit, including drinking water and water for dousing fires.

Diamond Campground

Diamond Campground is located among shady cottonwoods and willow at an elevation of 5,200 feet. The family sites are located just 15 miles from Spanish Fork and the group sites are 2-3 miles further. Visitors enjoy exploring local trails and relaxing along the stream. This large campground offers group sites, single and double-family sites, and walk-to-tent sites. Vault toilets and drinking water are provided. Picnic tables, fire rings, utility tables, and cement site pads are provided at each site; some sites on less-shady Loop B have picnic shelters. Group sites have picnic shelters, tables, campfire rings, grills, water spigots, and large parking areas. Sites 1A and B are about 2 miles beyond the family campground and sites 3-6 are a mile beyond that. Firewood is available for purchase from the host.

Maple Bench campground

Maple Bench Campground is located in Payson Canyon, on the Nebo Loop. The campground is in a timbered setting and has 10 single campsites available each with a picnic table and fire ring. Vault restroom facilities are available. Popular local activities include lake fishing, lake floating, rafting, kayaking, and hiking. Firewood is available for purchase from the host.

Maple Lake campground

Maple Lake Campground is 5 miles south of Payson on Nebo Loop Scenic Byway. 1 mile south of Maple Bench C Campground. A timbered setting with limited accessibility. Lake fishing and floating, rafting, kayaking, swimming, and hiking are popular recreation activities for this area. The campground includes 7 single sites equipped with picnic tables and fire rings. Vault restroom facilities are provided.

Day Use sites are located around the lake, sites have lake views, picnic tables, and fire rings.

Payson Lakes campground

Payson Lakes Campground is a local favorite, located just 12 miles from Payson, Utah. Visitors love the campground for its great fishing and canoeing opportunities, pretty scenery, and close proximity to town. This large campground contains single and double sites with picnic tables and campfire rings. Three group sites are also available, equipped with picnic and serving tables, grills, Dutch-oven cooking surfaces, campfire circles, water spigots, and cement site pads. Group sites are in an area separate from single sites and the day-use area. Vault toilets are provided near Group Site A; flush toilets are provided between Group Sites B and C. Vault toilets are provided in single and double site loops. Roads and parking spurs are paved. Firewood is available for purchase from the host.

Payson Lakes Day Use Area is located on the shore of Big East Lake and offers great canoeing, kayaking, and paddleboarding. Anglers enjoy fishing for rainbow and brown trout. Powerboats are prohibited. The big lake also offers a small swimming beach, picnic tables, and flush toilets.

Payson Lakes guard station

Payson Lakes Guard Station is registered as a historic structure. Guard station  is located in the Uinta National Forest, approximately 13 miles south of Payson, Utah, along with the Mount Nebo Scenic Byway. The Guard Station was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1935 as part of the New Deal Program. The Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest offers the cabin for an advance reservation so visitors can enjoy an experience similar to that of early Forest Rangers and their families. The Guard Station complex can sleep a maximum of 8 people in bunk beds; four people inside the cabin and four people in the bunkhouse. Up to 7 additional day use only guests may visit. Parking space is limited to 5 family vehicles. No vehicles are permitted off the pavement. An adjacent pasture is included which can accommodate 8 horses. There is a 2-night minimum stay and a maximum 7-day stay limit. Pets are not allowed. Guests should bring their own bedding, plates, and utensils. Guests will check in with the Payson Lakes Campground Host who will escort them to the cabin. Guests may bring their own firewood or purchase it at the campground; firewood collecting at the Guard Station complex is not allowed.

Ponderosa (UINTA) campground

Ponderosa Campground is nestled in scenic Bear Canyon just off the Nebo Loop Scenic Byway at an elevation of 6,200 feet. Nephi, Utah, is just 10 miles away. Visitors enjoy hiking and fishing in this quiet canyon. The campground contains several single-family sites with picnic tables and campfire rings. Some sites have grills. Vault toilets and drinking water are provided. Roads and parking spurs are paved. Firewood is available for purchase from the host.

Tinney Flat campground

Tinney Flat Campground is located in scenic Santaquin Canyon, just 9 miles from town at an elevation of 7,000 feet. Visitors enjoy fishing and exploring local trails. The campground contains three group sites that can each accommodate up to 50 people. Sites are equipped with picnic and serving tables, campfire circles, and grills. Vault toilets and drinking water are provided. Roads and parking spurs are paved. Firewood is available for purchase from the host. 

Elevation: 7,000 ft.
This campground is closed due to damage it sustained from a mudslide.

Whiting campground

Whiting Campground is located in Maple Canyon, just 3 miles from the town of Mapleton, Utah, at an elevation of 5,400 feet. Visitors enjoy hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. The campground contains group, single-family, and equestrian sites. One group site can accommodate up to 100 people, the other up to 200 people. Both sites are equipped with picnic tables, grills, campfire rings, and cement site pads. Single and equestrian sites have picnic tables, campfire rings, and cement site pads. Equestrian sites also have hitching racks. Vault toilets and drinking water are provided. Firewood is available for purchase from the host.

  • Water is not available at this campground, please bring water for drinking and dousing fires.
