The mountainous Salt Lake District is the classic “urban” forest. Known worldwide for those seeking the “Greatest Snow on Earth.” The proximity, scenic beauty, and year-round recreation opportunities make it a beloved and popular place for outdoor enthusiasts.

  • Drive Big Cottonwood Canyon Scenic Byway. Big Cottonwood Canyon Scenic Byway begins at the mouth of the canyon and goes east on SR190. The canyon narrows almost immediately to dramatic alpine scenery. Visitors can hike through the mining country of the Old West, or enjoy rock climbing, camping, or fishing. Near the top of the canyon, the major ski and summer resorts of Solitude and Brighton can be found. Big Cottonwood Canyon is a protected watershed area—dogs and horses are not allowed.

  • Drive Little Cottonwood Canyon Scenic Byway. Little Cottonwood Canyon Scenic Byway begins at the canyon mouth and goes east on SR-210. The canyon is home to Snowbird and Alta— two major ski and summer resorts. From the floor of the canyon, Mormon pioneers quarried massive granite boulders used to build the Salt Lake Temple. Little Cottonwood Canyon is a protected watershed area—dogs and horses are not allowed

 
 

BIRCHES picnic area

Birches Day Use Picnic Area is just a couple of miles up Big Cottonwood Canyon, conveniently close to Salt Lake City. Big Cottonwood Creek runs alongside the site. Visitors enjoy fishing, hiking, and biking. Birches has 6 picnic sites, all with tables, campfire rings, and grills. Parking spurs and pathways within the area are paved.

  • Season Passes are available for sale from the host at Storm Mountain or online.

  • Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons are watersheds:  NO PETS ALLOWED EVEN IN VEHICLES

Bountiful Peak campground

Bountiful Peak Campground is set in an alpine basin high in the Wasatch Mountains at an elevation of 7,500 feet. Farmington, Utah, is 9 miles away. Visitors enjoy exploring local trails on foot, bike, and off-road vehicles. This campground contains one group site that can accommodate up to 100 people. Picnic tables and campfire circles are provided, as are vault toilets. Firewood is available for purchase from the host.

Boy Scout campground

Boy Scout Campground is near a trailhead and wilderness access. It has 7 single sites, 1 double site, and 1 group site that can accommodate up to 35 people. This campground has vault restroom facilities. The campground is located in South Willow Canyon in the Stansbury Range.

Cottonwood campground

Cottonwood Campground has 2 single sites and 1 triple site. This campground has vault restroom facilities. This is a primitive campground. The campground is located in South Willow Canyon in the Stansbury Range.

Dogwood picnic area

Dogwood Day Use Picnic Area is just 2 miles up Big Cottonwood Canyon, conveniently close to Salt Lake City. Big Cottonwood Creek runs alongside the site. Visitors enjoy fishing, hiking, and biking. Dogwood offers several group picnic sites, all with tables, campfire rings, and grills. Parking spurs and pathways within the area are paved. Flush toilets are provided.

In late spring, dogwoods and lilacs bloom throughout the day-use area, creating a spectacular show among the greenery and shade of the pines, aspens, and scrub oak. Summer wildflowers paint the canyon with vivid color beginning in late July. Autumn leaves put on quite a show in late September.

Big Cottonwood Canyon is a beautiful area known for its soaring peaks, pristine hidden lakes, and cascading streams. Numerous hiking and mountain biking trails are in the area. Rock climbing is a popular activity as well.

Intake campground

Intake Campground has 5 single sites. This campground has vault restroom facilities. There is no water system in this campground. You will need to bring your own. The campground is located in South Willow Canyon in the Stansbury Range.

Jordan Pines group campground

Jordan Pines Group Campground has 4 overnight campsites available and 1 group day-use site available. This campground offers vault restroom facilities. The campground is surrounded by Pines and Aspens with wildlife viewing and recreation opportunities nearby.

Ledgemere picnic area

Ledgemere Day Use Picnic Area is just a couple of miles up Big Cottonwood Canyon, conveniently close to Salt Lake City. Big Cottonwood Creek runs alongside the site. Visitors enjoy fishing, hiking, and biking. Ledgemere offers 12 single sites and 2 double sites, all with tables, campfire rings, and grills. Parking spurs and pathways within the area are paved.

Mueller Park picnic area

Mueller Park Group Picnic Area is located just 5 miles from Bountiful, Utah, at an elevation of 5,400 feet. Visitors enjoy relaxing in the shade along Mill Creek and exploring local trails. This group area contains 18 day-use picnic sites, accommodating groups as small as 16 people and as large as 100. All sites have tables, campfire rings, and grills. Flush toilets and drinking water are provided. Roads, parking spurs, and walking paths within the site are paved. Firewood is available for purchase from the host.

Redman campground

Redman Campground is set among a forest of shady spruce and pine trees. Vivid summer wildflowers are abundant and autumn leaves put on quite a show. The campground contains two group sites and numerous single and double-family sites, all with picnic tables and campfire rings. Flush toilets and drinking water are provided. Firewood is available for purchase from the host. Roads and parking spurs are dirt.

Spruces campground

Spruces Campground is a large campground nestled along Big Cottonwood Scenic Byway. Spruces Campground contains several group overnight campsites along with a unique log cabin pavilion. Log cabin pavilion is very popular for “ forest” weddings, family reunions, and celebrations. The campground also includes day-use picnic sites, as well as numerous single and double-family campsites. All sites have picnic tables, campfire rings, and grills. Flush toilets and drinking water are provided. Firewood is available for purchase from the host. Roads and parking spurs are paved.

Storm Mountain picnic area

Storm Mountain Picnic Area is located in Big Cottonwood Canyon. This beautiful picnic area offers 14 single sites and 3 group day-use sites. Flush restrooms are available at this site. Firewood is available for purchase from the host.

Tanners Flat campground

Tanners Flat Campground is set among a forest of shady pine, aspen, oak and maple trees. Vivid summer wildflowers are abundant, and autumn leaves put on quite a show. Little Cottonwood Creek runs along the edge of the campground. This campground has an amphitheater. The campground contains seven group sites and numerous single and double-family sites, all with picnic tables and campfire rings. Group sites also have grills and serving tables. Flush and vault toilets are provided, as is drinking water. Roads and parking spurs are paved. Firewood is available for purchase from the host.
